Free Wifi Across Miri City Centre!
Looks like the politician isn’t about all talks.
According to the news in The Borneo Post, Mirians are able to enjoy free wireless internet until the end of this year. That’s more than half year to enjoy the free connection. Speedwise, its only 384kbps. But hey, that’s enough for everyone to check mail, chat and surf the web while on the go.
I myself haven’t tried connection. I don’t have any mobile device to do the testing
It does seems promising, since it’s new. So, for those who wanted to try out the free WiFi Internet Access, go to these location;
- CentrePoint Area
- Old Market Area
- Wisma Pelita Area
- Resident’s Office Area
- Jade Centre Area
- Mega Hotel & Surrounding Area
- Dynasty Hotel
- Somerset Hotel
- Ming Cafe
- Pacific Orient Hotel
- Miri Hotel
- Imperial Hotel & Surrounding Area
- Bintang Plaza & Surrounding Area
- Park Hotel
- Gloria Hotel & Surrounding Area
- Sarawak Tourism Office Area
- Tamu Muhibbah & Tamu Khas Area
Pelita Commercial Area and Boulevard Commercial Area is in their “Coming Soon” list. Now how cool is that? Too bad they don’t have coverage in the Airport area, or any residential area. I believe they are focusing on people that travels a lot rather than home user. Maybe they realise it’s a big problem if they encounter full time leeching home user hogging their free service as soon as they roll out the service in residential area. Good move I’d say. I mean, look at how fucked up is TMNet, and they still don’t want to upgrade their facilities, until they resort on shaping up the bandwidth usage.
Why wait now? Register your free account and start surfing. Gah, how I wish I have a laptop to test the connection and do a full review

Many companies choose to go with Exchange email outsourcing for their email when they are interested in Exchange 2007 but dont want to have to bother with hosting their own email system in-house. Outsourcing your email hosting still lets you have some power and options in your email systems.

I’m actually more interested in their fixed wireless broadband and future wimax (did celcom win a wimax license? i didn’t follow the news), but there’s no further information -_-
384 kbps is good enough for web browsing (not really good for those sites with heavy Flash implementations), I guess it’s good for those who carries wi-fi device around. For those at fixed location, it’s better to stick to (unfortunately this is the only choice) streamyx.
I tested the service last weekend at Jade Centre (AmBank) last Thursday, didn’t check the speed but browsing was smooth (I guess the main reason is not many people are using the service in that area). Props for a free service. I assume traffics of the network is busier at Curtin, hopefully someone from Curtin can review on it.

sirsc, you can always sponsor me a laptop and I can do a review straight away!
red, celcom didn’t win the wimax license. It is rumoured that TM is still able to roll out WiMax using their 2.5GHz spectrum license, although the 2.3~2.4GHz spectrum is not with TM. As I know, Redtone is one of the company that won the 2.3~2.4GHz spectrum license, and will be providing Sabah and Sarawak with WiMax by the end of this year.

what the hey?? 2.5ghz broadband? in east malaysia?! sounds sweet! i bet it’ll come with a hefty price tag though, broadband is expensive as compared with developed nations if you do a unit-for-unit currency comparo. RM is just weak in terms of buying power and the people dont get paid enough. life goes on though, sigh….
