The end of 2006

December 31st, 2006 in Personal 2 Comments

Like previous years, I always write up a sum of what I did throughout the year. Again, sorry for the lack of updates. With the Taiwan Earthquake that causes internet disruption all over Asia, me myself is affected. Slow internet make my productivity low. Nah, it’s actually me myself is quite busy watching quite a number of anime that I borrowed from my friend.

Well, the year 2006 kickoff with the me, slacking at home. I was waiting for my SPM result, but I was too lazy to find a part time job. That’s why I indulge myself with J-Entertainment, mainly Anime and Japanese Drama.

I got my SPM result on March 13, with a not-so-bad 8A 2B. Then after that, I consider my options on where I can continue my studies, and I come up with 2 choices, Accounts or Computers. After few days considering, I decided to take up CAT, an international accounting qualification. I believe I made a good choice, and I still have not given up my passion in the computer field. I still read tech-news, give computer technical support, and do a little web programming.

Year 2006 is indeed one challenging year. My first year NOT in government school, my first year where I have to pay fees to study, pay hundreds of ringgit to sit in an exam. Seriously, the money IS the factor pressuring me, not other stuff.

My life in ITF is not as busy as some of my friends who’s currently studying in big colleges and universities. They have projects, assignments, CGPA, bla bla bla. While me? Taking ACCA-CAT course is like going to tuition class, absorb the knowledge from lecturer, do some exercise, and then sit for exam. Everything is determine in the exam. Not like colleges or unis, they have marks in their assignments, projects, lab work and whatnot.

I learn a lot in my course. Not just the boring debit-credit, but I learn a lot of new things, like how businesses runs, setting up companies, and managing people. Those knowledge is one of the stepping stone to my dream, to setup my own company to take over the world. But the first thing in this taking over the world mission is to beat the hell out of Micro$oft.. Looks like I didn’t make a bad choice choosing CAT. Not to forget, this is year is also when I met the lousiest liar.

A lot happens this year, such as the world cup fever, the news that made Miri popular for a while, I got pulled to a direct sales brainwashing session, and not forgetting the dumb ass that took my blog entry about my gay friend. I also write about why I am still single, and that’s when I got a lot of thoughtful comments, like Love is Blind, and some says that girlfriend maintenance isn’t that costly. Well, maybe I can try my luck in this for the year 2007 :P
Anyway, Happy New Year 2007. :)

Combating Comment Spam

December 16th, 2006 in Site Related 7 Comments

Warning!!! Geeky content below. Not so useful for those not using Wordpress. But leave a comment or two so that I know that all my plugin is working fine, and you, as my reader can leave comment properly.

Fighting spam in my blog is a pain in the ass. I used to love Bad Behavior and how effective it is in preventing those fucking spambots from entering my blog. It works. But the recent version when it starts to use public spam listing, my own IP is detected as spam and I can’t perform any single shit on my blog. I tried changing my IP, but it seems like THE WHOLE TMNET IP RANGE IS BLOCKED! What the hell? Malaysian full of spammer is it? I have no choice but to left Bad Behavior plugin deactivated in my blog. I know most of my visitors is Malaysian, blocking them and myself is a stupid action.

Then I found out that there’s too many Trackback spam on my site. Although Spam Karma and Akismet successfully block and put them into spam list, but deleting a thousands of them a day is such a tired work. I can leave them alone, but as it accumulate day by day, it clogs up my database. So, I decided to try this solution. It works by blocking all trackback queries send to wp-trackback.php instead of the usual pretty permalink. I haven’t test whether this plugin will block legitimate trackback, but to see trackback to my site is rare. Well, I will test when I setup a sandbox. So far I don’t see any Trackback spam caught by Spam Karma, I guess it works.

As for normal comment spam, Spam Karma and Akismet works. But I’m not sure which plugin is messing up, because I kept receiving thousands emails on comments on my blog. But when I check my site, all those comments are not published, since it is all spam. Weird, last time this is not how it works. If a comment is blocked, it will not send every single spam comment blocked. Hey, one thousand new email on your mailbox is so fuck. To combat this, I decided to use the Math Comment Spam Protection. So, do the math before you can comment on my blog.

Now you’ve read this. Do me a favour by leaving a comment, of course without any spam words like poker, viagra or MILF sex. If you get 403 Error, or the comment doesn’t get through, leave a message in the shoutbox, or email me at geminigeek [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks :)

Updates: It seems like I forgot to rename back a core file in wordpress, making people unable to comment in my blog. No wonder my blog has been quiet lately. Now everything is properly renamed, I wonder whether the spam will come back or not…

Preventing Image Hotlinking

December 15th, 2006 in Site Related 2 Comments

I played around with a .htaccess generator. Now, I have disabled image hot-linking on my site. So, for those content leechers, RSS automated post idiots or just some plain idiot who love stealing my images, you will get this cool message:

stealer

Almost all my post have at least a smiley. Heh, if you happen to steal my content and forgot to remove all the smiley, there you go, you will see the message. It’s so cool, really. :)

Also, here’s an example of the dumb content stealer, stealing what I wrote about my gay friend (apparently he’s not gay though). I left a comment asking her to remove the article, and she deleted my comment and say “wtf?!?! is it a big deal? :)”. Well, no big deal. I just don’t like people to steal my content. Since she didn’t take any action, so I decided to enjoy the fun of replacing hot-linked images with some “OMG I AM SO BUSTED MESSAGE”.

Anyway, if any of you is using a web-based RSS reader, remember to tell me the link. I have to add them to the friendly list so that you will be able to see the images.

Updates: Thanks to andylkw for pointing out. Apparently the hot-linking message thing doesn’t work if you all clicked on the link with my site as the referrer. Now you should be able to see the message. :)

What’s with the Malaysian Police Force?

December 13th, 2006 in Writings 6 Comments

I don’t get it. Too corrupted I guess.

My mum’s friend and her whole family went on a vacation for like a week. And they got back from their vacation, they found their car missing from their house. Of course, what they do is report the case to the police. Few days later, the police found their car, and demand RM600 before they can claim their car.

What the hell?

Is this normal procedure? They’re like the legal gangster around town, doing daylight robbery. I didn’t know the police can claim RM600 from the victim. The police didn’t tell them where they found it, they just demand RM600 if they want their car return. Wow.

Next time if your car is missing, look for the Get Backers, I’m sure they don’t charge as high as the Malaysian Police Force.

Back on Track

December 11th, 2006 in Personal 2 Comments

Finally, I decided to login to my blog’s admin and start writing. Actually I wanted to write on my first CAT Paper Based Exam, but I was too sick to write few days ago. Yea, I was sick during my exam week! I kinda miss 2 days to study on the Managing Information and System paper. I learned a lesson, that is to take care of my health during exam week. Seriously, sick while exam is such a bad combination.

I hope wish I did well this exam. I wouldn’t want to disappoint my family, my friends, and also my lecturers. Hell shit, the price of this exam does pressure me. Imagine paying around RM250 per paper. The pressure is there. I just don’t know how to face my father when I said I fail my paper. I bet he’s so gonna kill me.

Now, exams over, and now I am stuck in the 3 weeks of boredom. Next semester starts next year, and that’s when I imagine myself getting geekier as I will be facing the computer more than ever, due to the fact that 2 out of 3 of my subjects are night class. That is like so LAME. Damn, I really need to find a part time. I should engraved hardworking in me, and start washing away all the laziness.

Anyway, here’s my 3 weeks holiday plan, or the New Year Countdown plan.

1. Revamp my site. I guess I did make a short post on my site structure change. I decided to focus more on my domain rather than subdomain. There will be A LOT of changes that I have planned, and I hope it carry out successfully. This time, I will be taking the monetize-my-blog process seriously. :)
2. Work on a Miri Bloggers project. Nothing cool, I just plan to collect and aggregate all the Miri Bloggers around the world.

3. Work on a web project. This, for now, I will keep it secret. You’ll know once its launched.

4. Anime. Of course I won’t miss this. I have so many anime that I haven’t watch. :P It’s never ending.

That’s it for today. More updates tomorrow :)
