Interest VS Job Availability

March 16th, 2006 in Personal

Dilemma, Dilemma, DILEMMA.

Interest VS Job Availability.

IT Course VS Accountancy.

My mom and sis was talking about me. My education. My further studies. My mom asked me, “What do you want to study??”. “Computers”, I answered, making Information System Engineering sounds simple.

Then she started asking my sister about her boyfriend, who have a degree in IT. My sister explains. She says that her boyfriend was indeed having a tough time looking for jobs in that particular field in MIRI. After a few contracts job in IT field with Shell and some other companies in Brunei, now he has a quite a stable job. But this job is totally not related to IT. He is now in the marketing field.

Then my mom start babbling about accountancy and how easy to get job with it. My sis agree with it.

I can see what they are trying to imply. GO FOR ACCOUNTS AND NOT COMPUTERS!!!

Here’s some list of stuff that I can gathered so far.

Accounts

  • Can study in Miri, this mean save cost as in living expenses and stuff.
  • Cheap, check out here. Look at the CAT course.
  • Easy to get job in Miri. (Even everywhere)
  • Still with family (yes, I am a family type of guy).
  • I don’t hate accountancy, but it’s not like I like it so much either.
  • My 8A2B SPM Result doesn’t seem to get any discount from that institution.
  • No outstation experience. Still in my homecity.

Information System Engineering

  • Study in KL, outstation experience.
  • Independent, no family with me.
  • Computers is my interest.
  • Discount up to 75% or scholarship provided by UTAR with my current SPM result.
  • Currently, it is almost 0% IT field jobs in Miri. This situation might change after a few years, but the posibility is low, in my opinion. I would prefer to work in my homecity rather than other places. That doesnt mean non-Miri jobs is totally out of my mind though.

With this list, I have to decide. It’s either I get a secure job or pursue with interest. This is a tough shit for me to decide.

True as Kenny Lee said. You have to decide what you want to work as in the future, and from there you take the course. For me, I took the networking course not because I think of I want to be a network engineer in the future. It just my interest, but then I find it hard to secure a job now. Even sometimes doubtful whether I have to go for IT or work in business field as what happen to most IT graduates.

So, think carefully and if you want IT, you gotta work your max up to it and do more self-study cos the college won’t teach you everything that you need in the working life.

little bro….as a bro to u, i cant make a decision for u…u can considered adult already..its up to u hw u make up ur choices…i’v been through this dilemma b4…whn i finis my f5…and lastly i took up QS course wic i also not sure wht izit actually….LOL…
but not really dunno lar….jz tat im like u now…i like architecture…i plan to study architect….but gettin a dip for architect is like shit…no point….to be an architect must atleast an oversea degree…thn i end up QS course…wic i dun really knw….but related in building stuff…after some consideration i jz go for it since job market is stil okie wif ths course…(although im jobless nw…fuck the fucking boss..blame myself to be unlucky) :x
anyway…my advise is smtimes we cant really do wat we like but smtimes we can…to make it simple i thk u shd consider ths….
    1. wat do u thk of securing a job nw?
    2. hw much u wanna earn in future?
    3. whr do u wanna wrk in future?
    4. wat do u wanna be in future?
    5. wat u wanna gain in future?

like me…i’ve been thru all these…studies…life without family….outstation….wrking….success….failure…all kinda experiences….like me jobless nw…i thk tat (1) getting a secure job is good…(2) earning depends on wat u field u graduate…like wat u knw…enginerring earns a lot..specially in oil n gas firm..mayb u might b a bit fuck up wif me stating oil & gas industry but sooner or later u’ll understand…. :P (3) if u prefer to wrk in miri thn not much choices u can make…unless u ever thk of wrking outstation…(4) this is the most important…allthough sometimes ths can’t be expected…but at least finding a best course secure ur jobs…(5) lastly all ths depends on urself… 8)
GOOD LUCK….u can oways talk to me if u wan some advise…regarding anythg…i can freely help u…no consultation charges….LOLZ :D

Thank you leaving your thoughts everyone, especially you my brother. Didn’t expect you to read my blog  Clive, good luck in your National Service. I’m sure you will enjoy it there.

Anyway, engineering course is indeed useful in the oil & gas firm, but considering I have a hard time coping up with all those physics topic in my SPM years, I don’t think I want to take up engineering courses. Though I may get A2 in Physics, but that was “study for SPM” attitude I planted in my mind. I don’t really like physics. Information System Engineering is more to software and programming, which is my interest.

Accountancy isn’t something I hate. I rather enjoy doing accounts in my class. Business Studies or Accountancy may be my 2nd choice after ISE.

Here’s what I have been thinking. Form6 is totally out of my mind currently. I don’t think I have the determination to get straight As for it. No straight As equals to hard to enter Local U. If my chance of entering Local U is low with STPM, I think I’d rather not waste the 2 years time in school.

Maybe I should take up CAT-ACCA and secure a job. At the same time, I think I can pursue with my interest as my hobby. That is my thought currently. I should take this thought in consideration for a few more days… sigh~

[…] After writing this entry and thinking about it for a few days, I have decided. I decided to stay back in Miri and enroll for ITF’s CAT course. Well, that is if I didn’t get the Petronas Scholarship. If I get the scholarship, I will of course go for it. Free Education, of course I wanted it. […]

[…] I got my SPM result on March 13, with a not-so-bad 8A 2B. Then after that, I consider my options on where I can continue my studies, and I come up with 2 choices, Accounts or Computers. After few days considering, I decided to take up CAT, an international accounting qualification. I believe I made a good choice, and I still have not given up my passion in the computer field. I still read tech-news, give computer technical support, and do a little web programming. […]
