Valentine’s Day

February 9th, 2006 in Writings

It’s almost Valentine’s Day. This is another normal day for me. Being single isn’t cool, when days like this come, isn’t it?

I always wonder, why does everyone goes lovey-dovey in this particular day? Why do sweets and chocolates have to do with this day? Why 14th February when there’s another 365 days to show your love to your love ones? What is the White Day celebrated by the Japanese?

Due to my curiosity, I did some searching at the WikiPedia.

St. Valentine’s Day falls on February 14, and is the traditional day on which lovers in certain cultures let each other know about their love, commonly by sending Valentine’s cards, which are often anonymous. The history of Valentine’s day can be traced back to a Catholic Church feast day, in honor of Saint Valentine. The day’s associations with romantic love arrived after the High Middle Ages, during which the concept of romantic love was formulated.

It seems like this lovey-dovey day is celebrated in honor of Saint Valentine. Valentine’s Day is an attempt by Pope Gelasius I to supersede Lupercalia, a big celebration held on February 15 to honour Faunus, god of fertility in Rome.

Hmm… interesting.

Chocolates
Mmmm… mmmm…. CHOCOLATES!!!

American started to exchange gifts, such as chocolates and roses in the 2nd half of 20th century. Usually, these gifts are given from a man to woman. Looks like us, Malaysian, follows their culture too. I’m sure a lot of Malaysian guy suffers a big hole in their wallet spending on chocolates, roses and even jewellery for their love ones on this special day. Unfair isn’t it? Why does the girl gets to enjoy and the guys gets to burn their wallet? :P

The Japanese and the Korean have different culture, which I think is far better than the guy-burn-wallet-girl-enjoy-everything culture. On Valentine’s Day, the girls gives chocolates to guys!! See? How fortunate those guys are. In return, they have the White Day, celebrated on 14th March, one month after Valentine’s Day. On this day, the guys returns the favor and give gifts to the girls. Gifts are usually white chocolate or marshmallow, but it can be anything. Fair and square eeh? Both guys and girls gets to recieve gifts from each other.

Valentine’s Day is nothing special for singles like me. Looks like I am buying chocolates for myself this year, again. :(
