BlogEvolution in Malaysian Blogosphere
I blog since last year. My friend kept on asking me why i blog. I just tell them, “I love making websites”.
I am addicted to website developing after my PMR. My first site was my school’s website. I’ve created a flash intro, and that site was created with a friend of mine. Since then, I’ve been developing websites. I still remember the site that I used to create uses a lot of tables and the codes are messy.
No CSS and no DIV. It’s a headache to handcode, but with Dreamweaver, table-ing is freaking easy
It was then in early Form 4, I felt like creating a site for myself. But, I don’t know what kind of site should I create. Back then, I don’t even know what the heck is a blog. I don’t even know that Blogger exist. Until i run across my schoolmate’s site, my senior, Subkiller (one regular commenter here
). He uses cutenews to blog. That’s when I think, “Hmm… I want a site like that too”. Well, Subkiller stop blogging now, I wonder when will he be back to the blogoshere.
Anyway, I started webhost hunting. Back then, it’s hard to look for webhost with PHP and a subdomain. I jump from host to host. Search up and down, ask from forums to forums, until I eventually found one. I uploaded my site, and start blogging! Back then, I have only 2-3visitors a day. How pathethic. It grows and grows, until I discovered ItchyHands and participated in a Blog Survey. Some survey was published in The Star and all the links to participaters blogsite was published too. That’s when I get more hits. I was happy that Clueless Dream was on the newspaper, although it was only a link like this – “Clueless Dream – http://geminigeek.uni.cc“.
I discovered WebmasterMalaysia not long after that. Thats when I come across LiewCF, and he blogs with WordPress. I think to myself, “I want to use WordPress too”. This forum is also where I found out PetalingStreet. PetalingStreet is the greatest to generate traffic back then. I got the most referers from PetalingStreet that time. It was like hundreds of hits came from Petaling Street every time I ping. I love bloghopping at PPS back then.
It’s year 2005, blog has become popular. I blog, you blog, businessmen blog, developer blog, everybody blog. This is when the world internet has changed. It’s the web 2.0 that everybody is talking about.
That’s when everything started to change. When LiewCF announced that he got his first cheque from Google, the Malaysian blogosphere has changed, thoroughly. All kinds of tech blog appears just like that. All of them does CnP blogging (that’s what Chewxy calls them). I can see that most of them lost the sense of blogging for the sake of revenue. Blog for revenue. It’s not blog for fun, or blog because I want people to read my writings. It’s BLOG FOR REVENUE.
Come to think of it, who doesn’t blog for revenue? I do. Look at those ads at my site. I want to earn money too. But, ok, there’s a but. But I still write. I don’t CnP. I don’t just CnP for the sake of revenue. I write.
I mentioned I used to love bloghopping in PPS. Now, it’s just too suck to bloghop at PPS. PPS is just full of people trying to earn revenue. I can’t find any interesting reads like I use to read last time. And PPS is not the main traffic generator, for now. Since Malaysian blogosphere has gone through an evolution, and everybody is blogging, it’s hard to gain traffic from PPS. I get less than 30 hits from PPS this month, compared to last year, where I can get 100 hits from PPS each time I ping.
After all this revenue thing, then there comes the multiple pinging to PPS, or throttle ping to PPS. Since there’s a lot of people doing CnP, they can post like 10 post in a minute (ok, I’m just exaggerating). Its 10 different post from the same person pinging to PPS in a minute. Desperates for traffic, desperates for revenue, that’s one thing I can say about them.
It’s hard to find good blog now. We bloggers couldn’t do anything about this evolution.

Web 2.0 is just an overhyped buzzword.
Let not our blogs be determined by the names we give to the world but by the posts we give to ourselves. Write it and they will come, that’s what I always say.
Oh, I noticed that you’re using Hashcash as your spam protection. I’d recommend you try out Akismet with Bad Behavior if you already don’t have it. It’s worth.

One must not let the visions of revenue blind one’s very path.
If you say you blog for revenue, you grow a horn.
If you say you blog not for revenue, you grow a horn.
If you say you blog for the sake of blogging, you still grow a horn.
If you so say you blog for [whatever] reason, you also grow a horn
If you so say you blog for no reason, you grow a horn as well
How so shall you say in that you do not grow a horn?
Have phun figuring that out! No. Being horny is not the answer
