Malaysia might have been formed on 16 September, but we acquired independence on 31 August '57 as entirely independent entity from British Colonies. You gotta make sure you understand the difference. The formation doesn't really mean, independence. It just means that we have established ourselves as a new country, with a new name. The independence of the peninsular was the catalyst, which made Sabah , Sarawak and Singapore joined in.

31 August is important because it is also the date when Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak achieved their independence from the British. Even though Malaysia was only formed on 16 September, the Merdeka Day for all parts of Malaysia is still 31 August.

However, we must remember that 1963 is the key year of reckoning - not 1957.

Let us don't agrue on the 16 September or 31 August first. But Malaysia is officially formed in 1963, not 1957. But somehow why 2007 is "50th" aniversary celebration of Malaysia ? :?:

Do we celebrate the independence day of historical indentities just like:

Gangga Negara, AD2 (Malaysia is 1800 years old!)
Langkasuka, AD2 (Malaysia is 1800 years old!)
Pan Pan, AD3 (Malaysia is 1700 years old!)
Srivijaya, AD3 (Malaysia is 1700 years old!)
Kedah Tua, 1136 (Malaysia is 871 years old!)
Majapahit, 1293 (Malaysia is 714 years old!)
Kesultanan Melaka, 1402 (Malaysia is 605 years old!)
Kesultanan Johor, 1528 (Malaysia is 479 years old!)
Persekutuan Patani Besar, 1603 (Malaysia is 404 years old!)
Sarawak Brooke, 1841 (Malaysia is 166 years old!)
Melayu Bersekutu, 1895 (Malaysia is 112 years old!)
Melayu Tidak Bersekutu, AD1800 (Malaysia is 200 years old!)
Borneo Utara, 1882 (Malaysia is 125 years old!)
Penjajahan Jepun, 1941 (Malaysia is 66 years old!)
Malayan Union, 1946 (Malaysia is 61 years old!)
Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, 1948 (Malaysia is 59 years old!)

If the celebration of Malaya, 1957 (Malaysia is 50 years old!) is valid, then the calculations of above are valid! :P

They probably forgot about malaysia day after national day. When the people finished the week long national day celebration, then they told themselves they need a rest. When sep 16 came, which is unfortunately just 2 weeks away from Aug 31, they probably became lazy and told themselves that it's ok that they don't celebrate it, after all it's about the same time. Eventually the two days were celebrated together on Aug 31, and Sep 16 is slowly forgotten after 3 decades.

I think another thing is that singapore broke off, so the meaning is no longer there, since there is a new malaysia that has been born.

Peace.

Yes, National day is the date which a state or territory archieved independence. Of course I know that. But do you know that on 31st August 1957, Sabah and Sarawak has NOT yet archieved independence? So, I still think that 16 September is an important date as well.
