Perodua or Proton?

June 4th, 2005 in Writings

The 2 top Malaysian Car Makers. Perodua and Proton. Just recently, Perodua has just launched their Myvi, which in my opinion is one of the greatest car by Perodua, though the design is yet another ciplak from Daihatsu and Toyota. To get into the competition, Proton will launch the Tiara Replacement Model and Satria Replacement model.

I am not much of a car freak. But if I am to compare Proton and Perodua, I’d go for Perodua. Last time, I don’t even bother thinking about Perodua, since all they have is compact car, doesn’t interest me. Now, they have Myvi. Myvi is quite spacious, and claims to be as spacious as Proton Wira. It seems small, but it is big. For a person as tall as me, I felt quite comfortable sitting in the driver seats and the seat at the back. Myvi is indeed great.

My brother has quite active in some Malaysian Car Enthusiast forum, I’m not sure what the link is. Anyway, most people there claims that Perodua is much better than Proton. Hah, I totally agree. People who owns a Proton car always face problem. I still remember the “engine got fire in Proton Gen-2″ news a few years back (or was it last year). And what Proton did is replace that person’s Gen-2 with a Proton Wira!! Now, as you can see, in terms of Quality Control, so far Perodua has no problem, but Proton? A lot. In terms of customer support? Hey, a Gen-2 is replaced with Wira?

Proton has to be improved in order to match with those big car companies. If Proton did really want to go international, come on, why don’t improve the local one before going international? If to compare between Proton and Perodua, Perodua is my choice :D ** Don’t mind me if there’s too much mistakes. Please correct me **

But the problem is, the Protons which were sent overseas are the good quality ones. We Malaysians are left with leftovers. “Kera di hutan disusukan, anak di rumah mati tak makan”.

we get inferior products down our throat. That is the double standards practices in the corporate world. i go for perodua anytime now that i have personally owned a wira and a kancil.

good job perodua..and for proton stop complaining about import cars…for years proton have control malaysian market…and they didnt care about producing good cars just because they think malaysian cant afford to buy imports car. It is time to change the kind of thinking.

It is time for the top proton ceo to go and get new people into the office with some new ideas.

To all the automotive vendors u guys better start producing good qualities parts soon..for how long this vendors are going to depend on proton and perodua. They had to stand thinking of exporting their parts to overseas….for me if proton dont start thinking ( + ) proton will closed shop in 4 years. This year sales show Toyota Avanza top selling car in malaysia…it is time proton and perodua start thinking how compete this foreign car.

Proton car really many problem after bought it …
Proton salesperson did not do what they promise to you …
Proton car seller(Proton sale branch) did not really take care their customer after you bought it (no after service at all) … can’t imaging from such new brand car delivered to you, the car already defect and missing some accessories. they are not take any responsible and asking you go to Proton car service center for any complaint by yourself bsc for car defect is car service center job as not proton sale job, car after sold is not their problem.
When you go to Proton service center, they have many reason to tell you and delay & reject your complaint, let you keep waiitng and not give you any feedback …
For missing item => no part number to order the replacement part
For defected => the order part is not coming and keep you waiting without any feedback from service center. Called up make appointment 3 days in advacne for cervice, come down service center they ask you go to part department double check the part is arrive and confirmed by yourself then the service supervisor only process you service… very bad attitude such as a service supervisor …

Most of you are right regarding this matter. Proton’s cars got more problem compared to Perodua’s. And a thing to remember is Toyota Avanza are now assembled in Malaysia, under one of these national manufacturers. Find out yourself. But the thing with Proton, the retired CEO is very un-automotive minded person. So when the Proton’s engineers design to improve Proton’s, the then CEO simply rejected the ideas without first consulting with these engineers. Then how can you compete in the auto-market if you cannot even produce a good and a high quality car. What is the goal of building national car company, if the company is incompetent. With this kind of management of course I prefer not to buy Proton, but when it comes to - you got no choice, some more you have to save a lot for an uncertain future. Its better for you to get one of national’s, and hoping the car wouldn’t break down after a while. What else can you do? Adaptability laa!!!

Yup, Perodua is absolutely better than Proton. Currently I’m having perodua kelisa. It is good and comfortable for me to drive all the way. Now I’m going to change my car. Perodua Myvi is the next car that I want. I hope that it will be more great. (For my opinion, Proton Savvy is my second choice that i ever hear any complaination about it before.)
    MARK GIVEN (100): Perodua=65 Proton=35

I TOTALLY AGREE that Perodua is much much much more better.. previously I have been using KANCIL for the past 5 years and I have no complain regard the product. But UNFORTUNATELY just bought PROTON iswara aeroback two months ago and noticed a few things about the car which really surprised me.. Alarm problem, rust at the sport rim and experiencing sounds when driving the car. The service centre? I rather not say or comment anything… wasting my time only….

I think both are good. both they have thier own specialities in manufacturing their cars. For perodua, i own their kancil for past 7 months ago..what i suffer is they have the bad sound system for their car whereas in the same time my husband own a wira SE for the past 2 years ago. However , the sound system is still maintain the best.. everything in the world they have the pros and cons so do the cars..

What if Perodua is requested to build their own car and not just re-brand? Could they do a good and competitive car? Could the design likeable? Proton’s car might be not good as Perodua’s but does it fair when proton fights with their home made gun and perodua fights with a very developed foreign re-branded gun?

Hi casual labour, i am not quite agreed with you. Although Myvi is rebrand and adapted from Daihatsu, but as a Malaysian, i feel shame that Proton still CANNOT compete with you so called “rebrand” Perodua car, don’t forget that it is 20 YEARS pass and Proton still cannot compete with a so called “rebrand” car ?

Just wish the new car will not ugly as Savvy. And wish their Campro engine will be better especially the gearbox. Thats all…

Perodua just built small compact car yet their quality, assembly and parts are far better than Proton. But handling and comfort will always Proton better.

Err…I do know 1 thing about Proton. After I bought Gen 2 - 1.6 (A) Automatic transmission less than a month, the car went into a problem. The ‘D’ gear for ‘drive’ keep blinking while i’m driving. That could be dangerous though especially when you’re driving for a long distance.

I think it is now the right time for us Malaysians voice out our comment about the problems of our national car companies that we are really ‘proud of’. Come on guys…do u all agree wif me? It is like what ‘Insider’ (one of the responden here) told before. It is true then…

I bought used Satria 1.6cc oct 2003 . Few month later i have gearbox problem and
spent more than 2k to solve it. Then i have a lot of problem such like
water pump, radiator, - starter, comprsssor, cooling coil, , altenator, overheat and
manymore problem..make me headache every month..
then last night i have again gearbox problem. What a mess with this proton car.
i really dont understand why many problem with proton car.
Sure i need to spent more 2k to solve it. It look like this proton car “makan duit”
and no good fengshui.. babai proton after this..After this i’m sure will change
another brand car. No more proton car even they offer cheap price.
I think proton need to do self checking where i heard they do “cincai” job when
assembly this car. i hope that they chang their altitude to produce quality car for
    malaysian not for foreign country.

1, it is idiotic to buy second hand cars without their mechanics or someone who
is an expert in automotive industry.
2, All this discussion does not help in getting proton as your mind has been made up
    (perception is not facts)
    3. If you put things in perspective , if u like, most road deaths are mainly what car ?
A Kancil or Kelisa…… did any one highlight that? The brutalility of that?
    4. Do most of you take care of your car or not in first place… ke dirve macam giler,

Perodua is not perfect. But I think they’ve improved a lot. I drive a Kelisa. It’s not perfect but it’s good enough for me. I’ve been driving it in major bumps in kampung roads for years and it’s still going strong although I had to do a few repairs here and there. If I were change my car, I might go for the MyVI. 1. leaking
For 2 weeks I parked at my car park and ‘banjir’ inside.
    2. caburator problem
I drove back to my hometown during Hari Raya Holiday and tried to overtake a bus. Suddenly, my car slow down. They said got nail inside my caburator.

    hey…
i’ve bought my viva last december. My 1st car ever…Till now not experiencing any prob..not just yet.
Mine is MT 850 cc only laa…couldn’t afford more than that for the montly payment
But 1 thing i noticed is that the gearbox bit stuck when tried to shift gear…or izit just me having difficulty handling the gear..????

Performance wise…since im not that racer type, the most is i speed at 120mph and it sure can overtook some cars ..
And also ah…the pickup is nothing to talk bout..shifting from gear 1 to 2 or to 3 sure bit slow..and the engine is kinda noisy, as though i’ve done some modification with the exzos pipe

And yeah, its not really soundproof from the inside…when u speed up, can hear the buzzing wind from outside…the door not as thick as savvy, heard ppl mentioned bout that.

Nevertheless, im gonna wait n see if i will encounter any probs wif my viva…for now, im happy using it…

    Pros:
    - fuel saving (now that the petrol price risen, lower cc definitely benefits more

-all the basic feature available in 850cc..all power windows, radio-cd player

-better than average compare to kancil and kelisa

before i forget one more thing that bothers me….
the other day, i push up the button where the rear (boot) door will open. I didn’t realised that..so i was quite puzzled when i saw the red light for doors kept blinking on and after awhile off on the meter screen…wth…i re-opened and closed all four doors, still same thing happened. Anyway, thought it might be some faulty wiring or something, didnt make a fuss out of it.

The nxt day, when i was driving that red light for doors kept bothering me…and i did a thorough checking, including the behind door…and yess..i found the main culprit behind the annoying red light. The rear door (boot) actually not shut properly…and…what im trying to question here is that…why won’t the alamrm goes off, if indeed the car didn’t closed properly??? Oh…well..guess this whr p2 lack on their security system…what if a wannabe thief discover that he can actually enter my car thru the back door..????

    P2…….any answer for my doubts??

Who said Perodua cars are good I think he or she are idiot or the person never drove or sat a car before. I tell the true stories about Perodua -Kancil & Kembara which my wife and I owned before.
1997- my wife bought the Kancil 850 EZ (Auto), after 2 years the steering shaft faulty !!! Then the four door knobs (outside) one by one broke. The air-con also like “cartoon”
I think my home fan is much better. The Kancil I can said is cheapo! But the price is not cheap RM33,800++ in 1997. The spare part also expensive but no quality like the no brand toy from made in China.

1999- I trade in my Iswara 1.5S and bought the Kembara 1.3GX (Manual) after 6 months plus everytime I apply brake the car will jerking from the rear wheels ; one of my friend his Kembara (Auto) also facing the same problem. More than three time I went to this Perodua Service HQ Penang at Petani Road ,they just kept on changed the brake oil and charged me !
Until the 4th attempt I really sound them ,then they replaced the mechanism for me. But after one year plus the problem intermittent occur…I really fed-up. The parts also very expensive; example a pair of wipers with cost you RM180 in Perodua Service Center in 2001. I took the wipers on my own to find the OEM wipers made by the NWB brand from outside spare part shop only cost you RM48 exactly the the OEM part. The Perodua Service Center really cut throat.

2005- my wife trade in her Kancil and changed to GEN-2 until now which is more than three years plus a bit of minor problem only .

2006 - I trade in my Kembara and change to Satria NEO 1.6 Auto H-Line at RM54,800. Almost 2 years I can so far so good in term quality ,air-con, handling…etc. The original sound system is great. Ayoh…yoh talk about Perodua cars sound system really like shit even OEM set for Myvi. One of friend can’t stand any more the sound quality of his Myvi and upgrade to Kenwood set.

The lousy Viva full spec dare to sell at RM43,000++
The Myvi Se also dare to sell at RM53,000++…….Perodua is really a BIG SUCKER.

The new Nautica - naughty sell at RM89,900. for Perodua brand and service center really go to hell……………………..

One should consider seriously before buying Perodua cars. The reasons r obvious - spare parts expensive, air con not cool enough, bumpy ride expected unless u don’t mind, d safety spec questional(I doubt it even meet basic minimum safety spec), d seats r uncomfortable for Viva models, fuel consumption not exactly economical except Viva & Kanchil(manual gears ONLY) & etc.

In fact, most of its models r overprice, not worthy of your $ to purchase 1. But it certainly suits people who finds it a big task to park bigger cars. D company always boasts of its partnership with Toyata & Daihatsu but in reality Perodua cars r very far behind these two brands.

ahhh…well, heard lotsa debates between P1 and P2…but anyways, it’s been said and done so im just gonna sit back and drive and see what happens next

But must admit that the rear seats kinda uncomfy … so-called medium grade seat.. the front seats ok lah..

I think same goes for P1, spare parts ain’t cheap either.. (sigh)

Thinking of honda accord & civic…as someone says, u pay more u enjoy more..huahuhaaa..but no money no talk lah
