Help Me with Networking and Streamyx

June 13th, 2005 in Personal

I’m so blurred. I can use streamyx anytime, only after i buy modem, router and activate my line. The problem now is, I have 2 pc in my house and I’m not sure how to setup the network. And plus, my brother wants a wireless connection to his pc. Here’s some suggestion from my friend:

Network Setup

Ok, now I kinda know how to connect those thing, but now I still not sure what modem and router to get. I afraid that the modem I get will get frequent disconnection. I afraid that the wireless router that I get is not good enough.

Just hoping any petalingstreet people could help me out. Thanks. I’d prefer if you all could include the model name so that it’s easier for me to do searching and deciding. Tell me the price too :tounge:

Just buy a Wifi Router with Modem and 4 ethernet port built in. Easy to setup brands are usually brands like CNet or Aztech. Some say go with Linksys. Up to you, it’s all the same. Just try not to buy unknown brands like ZTE or something similiar to ZTE that is made in China by the RoC dudes.

I’m using Aztech DSL600EW. If you choose to get other brands, make sure they support WPA encryption for the wi-fi or else you are gonna regret using WEP if some script kiddies live next door to you… (takes only about 4 hours to crack a 128bit WEP key. about 30 minutes on 64bit)

Linksys for Wireless Router and Modem Aztech would do fine…or better yet…go for Wireless Router Modem. I’m using Aztech DSL305E if i’m not mistaken. Cost less than RM250 in lowyat and has all the functions you need to start a wireless and secure everything :D

i went window shopping with my brother. I saw a d-link wireless router, and it the people there say that I need a WiFi card in order to use the wireless thingy.

Now, is this what I must buy?
    1. modem
    2. wireless router
    3. WiFi Card for my bro’s pc
    4. NIC Card for my own pc
    5. Ethernet Cable

    What’s your brother’s PC? a desktop or a laptop?

Modem, Wireless Router, PCI Wifi card, PCI Lan card and ethernet should all be it for a desktop…

if laptop…if not centrino or build-in wireless card then get a PCMCIA Wifi Card..others all the same

    Hi,

As masamura said, you should get a wireless router with WPA security. Usually new 802.11g wireless router will have this feature. Just an update to masamura info too, 64bit WEP can be cracked below 10minutes by an ametuer hacker, US FBI even demonstrated it in 3 minutes. :D

So happened i helped my friend to setup his wireless network last month, I bought him a D-Link 802.11g wireless router (RM230) for him and a CNet WIFI USB dongle (RM150). I forgot the model of the wireless router, if not mistaken it’s DI-624.

A WIFI USB dongle is advisable to buy instead of getting a PCI card because you can use USB dongle for both laptop and desktop. Good for future upgrade too, you can switch between laptop and desktop.

    Hi Guys,
Need help!!!! Trying to setup streamyx with linksys wireless router. Problem is I get a message saying “cannot detect internet connection” when setting up the router. When I connect the modem directly to my laptop net works fine. Am I making any obvious blunders??
    Thanks

I’ve been using Aztech DSL600EW modem for 1.5 years. About 2 months ago the wireless network access started becoming unreliable, with connection drops and repeated restarts to establish a connection.
Since last week the wired network connection also started giving the same problems, plus the modem will intermittenly restart by itself.
Please advise what should I do, if you’ve experienced the same problems and have resolved them.

Aztech support sucks. I bought their Aztech DSL600EW and the DDNS doesn’t work.
Port Forwarding is not working either.
Email their support many times. Only replied once with no help at all.
I will never buy their product anymore.
I will advice everyone I know not to buy their product again.

I am using D-Link and their support from singapore is superb. Email response within 10 minutes during office hour.
I used to own 3 Aztech products but now I am replacing them with DLink 624+, DLink 634M and DLink 2100AP. So far no problem from D-Link.

by the way, I have a question too. How to connect my wireless laptop to AZTECH 600EW?

I only have laptop, and Aztech600ew. Should I need to buy Wireless Card for laptop too or configure something else?

Dude, VPN, which uses the ipsec protocol can take up to 30% of your network bandwidth. So it has nothing to do with your router at all ;)

Hey Gemini!! Anyways I just setup my own wireless network too.My rig - ZTE modem (the TMnut ori modem) + Linksys WRT54G v7(RM255) at IT Boulevard with 1 yr shop warranty. My father uses DELL 6400 so the built in network card save the cost do buy a separate PCMIA wireless card for it.Result? Both desktop and laptop can use ineternet at the same time! sweet~

Don’t get the router with modem, get separate device as you can change your router in future..I like Aztech modem and Linksys/Dlink products.

Found a pretty informative website on home networking:
