Moral Studies, Useless Yet Important

January 10th, 2005 in Writings

Moral being a subject which is compulsory in SPM. I’d think it’s rather nonsense. What do we do in that subject? Here’s what all the student are force to do:
- Memorise all the moral values with the exact definition.

Ok, Moral might be one important subject, but memorising the moral values?

Is it like, when I did a good deed, then I would say, “I’m being bertanggungjawab today. I finished my homework.” Or maybe something like, “I just celebrate my Mom’s birthday. I have kasih sayang terhadap keluarga.”

I’ve been in secondary school for 4 years (this is my 5th year), and I always have to waste my time to memorise all those stupid moral values and the exact definition.

The Moral Studies paper consist of 8 question in part 1, and 3 essays (answer 2) in part 2. Part 1 is pretty ridiculous. They give you a situation, and there’s always a “must” question, which is:
- Apakah nilai moral yang diamalkan oleh Ali/Abu/any name?

Moral Studies would be better if they focus on the current issues about teenagers and their problems, where most student might face, or had face. We should be asked on how we must handle this kind of situation. This subject should make us (as student) think further and the consequences on teenagers’ issues. That’s a more meaningful Moral Studies.

Currently, Moral Studies is a compulsory for non-islam student in SPM. Useless as a subject for student to study, Important for SPM to score SPM.

I always believe that pratical utilization of the values are better off than just rote. How many people who score on the paper are actually moral or is it that they are just good memorizers. Plus then rigid marking means rationalizing and proving your assigned value is of no use unless it was the one stated in the marking scheme. I would argue that community service programmes and merit systems (such as volunteer service work given weightage for uni entrance) is a better system than exams for this subject.

Wah.really agree with you.Pendidikan Moral is really waste of time.Memorizing all those values will make us good? haha
Some questions are really silly too.

I was very suprised coz i got A1.Then my friends who actually behave better than me practically, got sumthing like C6 or P7.
I guessed i wrote watever ‘nilai’s i know into those tiny 3 or 4 line answers.Hentam saje la..

Moral may seem as a rather ridiculous subject. But it helps us to get along with friends.
With the new format, there’s an approximate of 16 NILai.
With proper formula, one can surely remember and do well. But still, I didn’t not agree with Moral subject to be introduced.
But still, what to do? We’ve got to make the best of it..
Life may be challenging, but still by a twist of fate, it can proof to be wonderful.

To tell the truth, i really sucked at Moral.. i got D7 for the past exam

i actually really enjoy reading moral. i heard from my school teacher that moral in spm is 100% base on our textbook. so if you read the textbook definately you can score. it may look boring but my technique is to read it in between other subjects lol.
actually listening to teacher in class also really helps( that is if you have a good moral teacher):lol::lol::idea::smile:

Lol…i absolutely agree with wat u said…P.Moral is totally useless by just memorizing all those so-called “nilai-nilai murni”…I passed my Moral with a B3 in my SPM last year…I still felt i could have gotten an A…anyway, i thought the Moral nightmare was over till i went to college…Man, its even more useless than the SPM’s version of P.Moral….Known as Moral Studies, week after week u hv to present hopeless topic such as “Definition of moral- i) Define the Normative Statement. ii. What is Basic Concept of Values” , or even “Explain the Comtent, Form, and Dimension of the Moral Being”…. :( I was left clueless as on how to start doing my presentations…Well, me and my course-mates feel that this Moral Studies are nothing more than to gv the Malaysian MOE something to do rather than lazying around….No offense to the Malaysian Education System. :noworry:

    Hi,i’m student from malaysia too.

Personally…i think what you said is……damn right. What’s the point to memorize all this moral values(nilai-nilai murni). I got a Moral A student is my class who wont even stand up when greeting the teacher when the teacher comes in or out.The question is: What is the point ?
They make us study and study and memorize and memorize. What is the point of memorizing the moral values when it is not incultivated into our daily life ?Wat’s the use when i always dun pass up my work while i know the definisi for bertanggungjawab, kerajinan ?
It was like…WTH.Summore need EXACT definition, again,What’s the point ? Don’t i know the meaning of a single malay word after years of malay education ? Then might as well fuse it into BM ?Lolz…sarcastic.
And i dun think it simply play ANY part in the later stage of our life. Because i believe how somebody behave, will not be (sarcastically) determined or affect by malaysian education system.Yes,i dun deny exam oriented education system is not a good education system, look at singapore, they are way more further than us in the education field. But…malaysian exam oriented education system is like………..crap.

And finally, does you all know why i written so much and how i found this blog ?Because i will be having my moral paper tomorrow and i was searching through the net see whether SPM Pendidikan Moral rings a bell…or not…

I agree, even an extra “yang” word in the definisi will cause 2 marks down the drain…

Totally agree with you man. And guess what, MORAL STUDIES IS COMPULSORY IN COLLEGES! And if you are in an expensive-feed college, you have to PAY for it! PLUS: if you don’t get a pass, you’ll won’t be able to graduate from the college…

    it’s worse than SPM.

Anyways… when you’re in college, you’ll have to sit for another subject called ‘Malaysian Studies’ as well… Don’t know about other colleges but my college is compulsory.

Fail either one of these = NO GRUADUATION

Moral sucks …. i don’t know why the hack i’m doing moral….o wait a minute it is because its compulsory. Moral is just a waste of time. I tought my days of moral was over after memorising all the 36 value from form 1 till form5 and here i am still doing moral in college. I really do wish that the goverment will abolish or at least change the method of teaching for moral n malaysian studies.. Not only moral studies sucks but the teacher teaching it is also lousy n boring. Moral studies will be over for me after this sem n i want to wish all the best who are still doing moral….

ya, i agree that moral education is a useless paper for SPM. however is just a waste of time of memorise. Malaysia still very far to improve our education. To improve with hacve to get rid of those stupid subjects. hopefully, all the subjects will change to Englsh such as Science,Mathematics,History,Geography, and others. to improve our english vocab. language of Bm does not use in overseas so what is the point of study Science,Mathematics,History,Geography, and others in malay. Is Just waste of time.

Looking back at my SPM days, I realise Moral did help me.

I am a medical student now, and part of the medical syllabus in Australia involves abstract phylosophical concepts and clinical skills (ie, we need to be able to answer questions based on those themes). I realised that P. Moral helped me in a way. It gave me the answer structure I needed. This came about because we had to answer PMoral papers according to the answer script. I used the answer structure I learnt from PMoral in my medical course.

In short, no knowledge is useless knowledge. Learn it with an open heart.
