I am a student here in Japan majoring in engineering. I could say that theres a big misconception about the usage of English by Japanese among us Malaysians. While Japanese are successful at a lot of fields with their own language, they still regard English as a highly valuable asset. All universities from Tokyo Uni to Fukuoka Uni ALL requires an English test which has a level comparable to Singapore’s A level. As a fact, while Japanese can’t speak well in English, their prowess in Grammar & Comprehension is way above most of the M’sians(especially the Malays). Foreign language is needed by them to master other fields(like aeronautics(USA), finance(Swiss), heavy machinery(USA & Germany) & IT(USA & India).

Sorry for the long post, but those are my points in what I’m trying to convey. Trust me, as much as we want BM to be our ‘one and only’, its still too early for us to do so. The only time we are ready is when we see M’sians start producing new items from our R&D instead of just manufacturing items which are being researched in another country. Maybe a Nobel Prize for a M’sian researcher based in M’sia would be a clear indication too.

The next best alternative is the “quick and dirty” Google machine translation and failing to find English to Bahasa Melayu, the next best is “Bahasa Indonesia” and this is the result and reproduce it verbathim with compliments from Google:

Server yang memberikan plug and play kepada klien baik menggunakan perangkat keras atau perangkat lunak joystick. Joystick goes into the port of the client.

Looks like “keras” will always remain “keras” .

Like YOU ‘malay’ have never make fun of the ‘mat salleh’ as well.
