Why Mahathir Insist Math & Science in English

June 15th, 2004 in Writings

This is what i got from the bulletin board of my Friendster.

Why Mahathir insist on using English for math and science. Because the world uses the english language as the main language for information technology. How dangerous would it be if we’re still going to use Bahasa, especially in school. See example below.

*hardware = barangkeras
*software = baranglembut
*joystick = batang gembira
*plug and play = cucuk dan main
*port = lubang
*server = pelayan
*client = pelanggan

Try translate this:

ENGLISH :
That server gives a plug and play service to the client using either hardware or software joystick. The joystick goes into the port of the client.”

BAHASA :
Pelayan itu memberi pelanggannya layanan cucuk dan main dengan menggunakan batang gembira jenis keras atau lembut.Batang gembira itu dimasukkan ke dalam lubang pelanggan.”

Now You Know………

Funny eeh? Hehehehe

hehe, lots of bad words. of course that will happen if we only translate it directly from English to Malay, without understand the meaning. for example software could be translated as “perisian”.

“Komputer pelayan menyediakan perkhidmatan sedia main kayu-ria kepada pelanggan.
Kayu-ria komputer pelayan dihubungkan kepada komputer pelanggan melalui pelabuh”

    note:
    1. WHERE THE HELL GOT SOFTWARE JOYSTICK?
    2. WHY & HOW IN THE HELL YOU CONNECT SERVER JOYSTICK INTO CLIENT PC?

kalau bahasa melayu awak tak cukup bagus, jangan sesekali merendahkan taraf bahasa melayu!

I admit it, my malay isn’t that good. But heck, it is just a joke!!! I’m not trying to pull down the standard of malay. For goodness sake, it’s just a play with languange. What’s wrong with you? Everybody plays with the flaws in language. Try direct translating Malay to English, it creates funny stuff too.

    As for answering your question:
    1) No software joystick? Create a program that emulates the work of a joystick, there u go, a software joystick.
    2) I never written or quoted anything that says “Connect server joystick into client PC”. Read properly before you start WRITING IN CAPS, in which means YOU ARE PRETTY ANGRY.

If you are so pissed, why dont you flame the person that posted this shit on my friendster bulletin board?

joystick is not the same as software joystick(emulated joystick as running program). Joystick is tangible but software joystick is intangible… hahaha.

    just joking

I am tickled pink by the translation and seriously, if there is any good BI-BM translator out there, please do us a favor by rendering a proper translation.

The next best alternative is the “quick and dirty” Google machine translation and failing to find English to Bahasa Melayu, the next best is “Bahasa Indonesia” and this is the result and reproduce it verbathim with compliments from Google:

Server yang memberikan plug and play kepada klien baik menggunakan perangkat keras atau perangkat lunak joystick. Joystick goes into the port of the client.

Looks like “keras” will always remain “keras” ;-) .

Honestly, BM is a useless language. With BM, you can’t go anywhere with that language what more succeed in it. BM, unlike Japanese, German, French language, doesn’t a strong backing in the scientific & economic field. BM might allow you to live a problem-free life in M’sia, but outside it, none would recognize it & none will even hire you based on your BM proficiency.
I do however, agree that BM should be our main & only lingua franca. But the time isn’t right yet. We still lack the ability to translate & comprehend most of the technical terms needed.

I am a student here in Japan majoring in engineering. I could say that theres a big misconception about the usage of English by Japanese among us Malaysians. While Japanese are successful at a lot of fields with their own language, they still regard English as a highly valuable asset. All universities from Tokyo Uni to Fukuoka Uni ALL requires an English test which has a level comparable to Singapore’s A level. As a fact, while Japanese can’t speak well in English, their prowess in Grammar & Comprehension is way above most of the M’sians(especially the Malays). Foreign language is needed by them to master other fields(like aeronautics(USA), finance(Swiss), heavy machinery(USA & Germany) & IT(USA & India).

Sorry for the long post, but those are my points in what I’m trying to convey. Trust me, as much as we want BM to be our ‘one and only’, its still too early for us to do so. The only time we are ready is when we see M’sians start producing new items from our R&D instead of just manufacturing items which are being researched in another country. Maybe a Nobel Prize for a M’sian researcher based in M’sia would be a clear indication too.

So true, BM outside M’sia is useless. Just how many countries understand Malay and used Malay language. I’m a Chinese and it help me a lot for being able to communicate in Chinese with people from China and Hong Kong. Its also true that most technical information (operating manual/user manual) for whatever machine is in English or French or German. So its not only wise to learn English but also essential to get a better job. Good luck looking for Malay version of computer OS.

I’m Malay..its true that BM is useless when we study in high level..we see as close enough as UiTM..i’m one of students in UiTM..all the subject using English..and most of the employee want graduate from uitm to be their workers instead choosing from UM or UPM and others..

Unfortunately we are in agreement. Ive said it before and Ill say it again. We have a Super Bowl defense and an offense that belongs with the Browns, Bengals, Raiders, and Rams of the world. Where does that leave us? It means each week is a complete toss up. We can beat or lose to just about anyone.
